OKLAHOMA! Talk on the Steps by Jim Bissett

Professor of History Jim Bissett discusses the frontier history of Oklahoma and the legacy of the settlement of the American West in his Talk on the Steps for Oklahoma! Bissett introduced the audience to historian Frederick Jackson Turner’s ideas about the importance of the western frontier for developing ideas of democracy, then explained how these ideas are reflected in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical, and finished by arguing that these ideas also influenced the immense popularity of Oklahoma! in Cold War America.
