Dr. Evan Gatti, who teaches in Elon’s Department of Art and Art History, takes the McCrary Theatre steps to discuss the construction and challenges of “the romance of Florence” in her Talk on the Steps for The Light in the Piazza. Dr. Gatti described her own first experience of Florence as a young woman, and compared this excitement and wonder to the experiences of the characters of Clara and Margaret in the script. She then questioned how and why tourists interact with historical sites, noting how the roles of colonialism and imperialism are often erased both in the tourist-friendly narratives they encounter and in the expectations they themselves bring to tourist sites.
