CLYBOURNE PARK Talk on the Steps by Mary Jo Festle

In her Talk on the Steps for Clybourne Park, Dr. Mary Jo Festle, who is Maude Sharpe Powell Professor, Professor of History, and Associate Director of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning at Elon University, describes growing up in Chicago and the segregation of Chicago neighborhoods. She explained to the crowd how ethical codes for realtors in the early 20th century promoted segregation, and how racially restrictive housing covenants allowed for housing discrimination in Chicago and other northern urban centers. These practices resulted in the segregated neighborhoods still seen in Chicago today.
